Turning 40? Here's how to look after your skin

  • Written by The Women's Magazine

The 40s is often the most confronting decade where our skin is concerned because this is when it really starts to show visible signs of ageing, especially for those with fair skin, which is prone to sun damage.

9Honey.com.au reports for some, the hard work of previous decades will be paying off – and they'll be showing fewer fine lines and plumper, firmer texture. Those who may only just be getting started on their skin health journey will have to begin with the basics. But no matter the level of attention you've paid to your skin in the past, it's definitely not too late to start investing in your complexion in your 40s.

Author Melanie Grant, who wrote The Modern Guide to Skin Health, said: "Instead of waging war on lines, I suggest trying to treat any pigmentation or redness that might flare up in these pre-menopausal years, and continuing on a preventative regime to improve your overall skin health, keeping it plump, firm and glowy."

Here are Melanie's top tips to look after your skin:

40s – A basic plan in the morning

  1. Gentle, hydrating cleanser
  2. Antioxidant serum
  3. Eye cream
  4. Moisturiser
  5. SPF50 sunscreen

In the evening

  1. Oil cleanser
  2. Gentle, hydrating cleanser
  3. Hydration serum
  4. Retinol serum
  5. Retinol eye cream
  6. Night cream
  7. Face oil

The Modern Guide to Skin Health by Melanie Grant, out now via Macmillan Australia (RRP $39.99).
